Portland Personal Training| Calculating heart rate while training

If you are not using a heart rate monitor, then you need to take your pulse manually. You can either take this at the neck (Carotid Artery) or on the wrist (radial or thumb side). If you get confused, remember the thumb Rotates (Radial Side). Use your index and middle finger, don't ever use your thumb because it has its own pulse and it will confuse your count. You can take the pulse for: 6 seconds x 10, 10 seconds x 6, 15 seconds x 4, 30 seconds x 2, or 60 seconds. Some of the cardiorespiratory equipment will have built it heart rate monitors that you can hold onto, but I always find them to be inaccurate. Thanks,Kisar
