With winter coming on, the possibility of sickness, especially colds and the flu, is getting higher.  We all know that a great way to prevent sickness is to exercise regularly.  Lots of studies have shown that exercising multiple times a week bolsters the immune system and helps people remain healthy.  But what if the unthinkable happens, and through some unfortunate happenstance – germy kids, a dirty doorknob, air on public transport – you get sick?  What then?  Should you still workout?  The answer, it turns out, is pretty simple: yes.  You should.  There are a few simple guidelines to follow, but so long as you listen to your body and don’t overdo it, it is perfectly alright to exercise with a sickness. If you are working with a fitness professional or Portland personal trainer, let me know how you are feeling and they will give their expert fitness opinion if you should train that day or just rest and let your body heal. The first rule of exercising when sick is to know where the sickness is.  You’ll be able to tell.  It’s the part of you that feels worst.  If the sickness is above the neck, such as a head cold, you’re golden.  Go workout.  Get your sweat on.  You might even feel better afterwards.  However, if the sickness is below the neck, like the flu, stay inside.  Working out with nausea or an achy, feverish body is no fun, and will probably just make you feel worse and could prolong the sickness.The second rule of exercising when sick is to take it nice and easy.  This one seems like a no-brainer, but a lot of us have trouble not completing the workout we have scheduled.  But being sick is taxing on the body, and the last thing you need when you have a cold is a workout that will exhaust your already tired body.  So instead of going to the gym and trying to set a new max for your bench or going out and doing a hard ten mile run, you should do some yoga.  Go on a jog or a walk.  Do something that will stress your muscles and get your heart rate up, but don’t go nuts.  The thing to focus on is getting healthy, not killing yourself in a new workout.So, to sum up, it’s generally okay to work out if you have something like a head cold.  But that doesn’t mean you should go as hard as you can.  Pacing yourself and listening to your body is crucial so as not to prolong the sickness or injure yourself.  Don’t exercise if you feel the sickness below your neck, and definitely don’t try to do anything too intense, regardless of where the sickness is. The Art of Personal Training by Kisar Dhillon107 SE Washington StreetSuite 137Portland, Oregon 97214503-953-0241
