There are a lot of different diet variations that have come and gone with the years.  The Atkins Diet gained fame about a decade ago by introducing the idea of cutting out carbs in order to lose weight.  People have been vegan or vegetarian for decades now, and recently the paleo diet has been making waves as a fantastic way to shed weight and gain muscle, as well as a solution to stomach problems such as IBS.  Many of these diets have helped people feel better and lose weight, but there are other solutions as well.The above diets are all extreme examples of a more basic way to lose weight: cutting out sugary, processed foods and replacing them with whole, unprocessed foods.  The great thing about going paleo or vegan or whatever is that these diets are uncompromising about what you can eat.  That makes it easy to decide which foods you can buy and which ones you can’t.  If you have trouble with sticking to a regular diet and need a more structured meal plan, then going paleo or vegetarian may be the thing to do.  On the other hand, if you don’t have any trouble reducing the amount of sugar and cream you put in your coffee, then you don’t need to be so extreme. You can take elements of a paleo diet, for example, like eating lots of vegetables and high-quality meats, but still eat bread and legumes, if those foods agree with your body. Or, conversely, you might try going meatless for a few days a week and instead eat the whole grains and legumes popular in a vegan diet. Experiment and see what makes you feel best.
