Personal Trainer Portland | Walking or Swimming | Obese Individual

I am going to get right to the point on this. Being active in the water is great, but if you are morbid obese or even 60lbs overweight, I would recommend walking first and then start a swimming program. Why? Because you will burn more calories walking if you are overweight versus swimming. When you are extremely overweight, you are going to float like a life preserver because you will be more buoyant. There are exceptions to the rule, especially if you have no cartilage left in your knees, then yes, water exercise is better than nothing. Now, when you lose the weight, swimming is a fantastic workout and it can get you in tremendous shape. Some people may disagree with me, but I have seen 400lb individuals swim for 90 minutes straight and they did not lose much weight. I have seen leaner individuals swim for 45 minutes most days of the week and transform their bodies. Thanks,Kisar S.
