Personal Trainer Portland Or | Foam Rolling For Beginners

Congratulations! You’ve heard all about this foam rolling thing and you’ve decided to give it a try! You won’t regret it- foam rolling helps to eliminate pain and tightness and improves movement and posture. But where to start, you ask? Let’s start with purchasing your very first foam roll. You can buy a roll at any sports store. Some department stores may carry them as well, like Target or Wal-Mart, but they are generally not as great of quality and will break down faster with use. I recommend Sports Authority or a similar type of sports store. Now that you’re standing in front of a wall of foam rolls, which one do you buy? There are different sizes and different types of firmness available. Either size will work, the full three feet or the foot and a half. The longer roll, however, can be easier to move around on if you have a larger body size. It is also easier to stay on the longer roll. As far as firmness, it depends on your fitness level and pain tolerance. The firmer the roll, the more painful it’s going to be. However, if you have a strong upper body you can better control the amount of body weight you are putting on the roll. If you are just beginning an exercise program and haven’t built up much strength yet, you may want to start with a softer roll, and graduate to the harder roll. With consistency (meaning everyday!) you will feel less tight and have better movement patterns and less pain in a matter of weeks! Happy rolling!Mallory StevensThe Art of Personal Training By Kisar Dhillon The Art of Personal Training by Kisar Dhillon107 SE Washington Street, Suite 137Portland, Oregon 97214(503) 953-0241
