Jumpstart Your Day | Exercise or Coffee | Portland, Oregon

Jumpstart your dayCoffee is an absolutely awesome thing to wake up to.  There is no doubt about that.  But it also can create a dependency, and you’ll eventually get to a point where you can’t wake up without a cup of coffee.  There are other ways to wake up your body and mind, however, and they aren’t nearly as addictive.  Here are a couple of them.

  1. Exercise – throw down a ten or fifteen minute run when you wake up. It’s can be hard to exercise that early, but the fact of the matter is that exercising will wake your muscles up, get your heart pumping, and open your eyes just as quickly as coffee.
  2. Stretch – this one doesn’t even require you to get out of bed to begin with. When the alarm goes off, just go through a series of simple stretches.  Point your toes, then flex them towards your knees, using only the muscles in your leg.  Pull one leg up to your chest, knee flexed, and then the other.  Swing your legs out of bed, then do some chest opening exercises.  Finally, stand up and stretch your body up as high as you can, then fold over and stretch your hamstrings out.  This will get your body loose and limber, and wake you up a little bit more gently than exercise.
  3. Water – this one is similar to coffee in composition if not in flavor. The minute you get up, slam a glass of water down.  Not only will the water wake you up, but it will hydrate you and prepare you for the oncoming day.
Waking up doesn’t require coffee.  Stretching and exercising are equally good at getting you out of bed feeling fresh and ready to go, and are far less addicting than coffee. The Art of Personal Training by Kisar Dhillon107 SE Washington StreetSuite 137Portland, Oregon 97214503-953-0241
